This is a review in progress as well as some discussion of the launch FFXIV,the virtual currency of which is called Final Fantasy XIV Gil. Daniel Tack will be issuing an “official” score once he’s had a lot more time to explore the end-game.
At first, oddly enough, I had no issues whatsoever.I’d gotten wind that a number of players were stuck with full servers (or Worlds) and unable to access the game, but I hadn’t encountered the issue myself.I was charmed, perhaps. Destined to blaze right through. Then, over the past few days, things took a turn for the worse.

I’d made two characters initially, and couldn’t make any more since Square Enix had turned that function off (along with ceasing new sales of the game. But now, whenever I tried to start the game using either character, I received a message telling me the world was full and to try again later. No queue, no line to wait in, to clock ticking down. Just a message proclaiming my defeat.
This morning, when I launched the game again, I couldn’t even press the “Start” button. I’m officially locked out.at least for now.All of which is to say: the launch of FFXIV has been a total disaster even one week later—but not because it’s a bad game. It’s the reboot of a game so terrible it was pulled and remade and the final product, so far as I’ve been able to tell, is highly polished and fun.
We’ve heard this tune whistled before, but it seems particularly bad this time around. As Kotaku’s Mike Fahey puts it: “From an unfinished mess that no one wanted to play to a highly-polished gem that nobody can access in just under three years.”
